Kerian McManus, VP, Development, Participates in First-Ever SID-Washington Private Sector Development Workgroup Meeting

Kerian McManus, VP, Development at DynCorp International, participated in the first-ever Society for International Development (SID) Washington Chapter’s Private Sector Development Workgroup meeting, held Friday, January 20, 2012.

McManus serves as co-chair with Kristi Ragan, Chief of Party for USAID Grand Challenges Project, Development Alternatives, Inc. (DAI).  The workgroup hosted a planning meeting to discuss the upcoming year. McManus and Ragan led a discussion to develop and identify an accurate workgroup name, mission statement and description, exact functions of the workgroup, desired outcomes from workgroup participation and other key figures in the development area that should be engaged and participate.

The workgroup’s goal is to help evolve the discussion from Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to (1) the role of private sector in development, (2) partnerships that are more robust, and (3) bringing in non-traditional actors to international development.  The mission statement, which is under review, states the following: Read more →

In his presentation, McManus discussed:

The international development community is abuzz with impending budgetary cuts and a blurring of the lines between traditional development assistance and stabilization and reconstruction initiatives implemented through defense agencies.

Amidst this clatter, it is important to not lose sight of a few fundamental understandings. Core elements of international development will continue to be framed and measured in economic terms. Global Partnerships

At a forum held during Public-Private Partnerships Week, October 17-21, 2011, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah announced the establishment of a new Office of Innovation and Development Alliances (IDEA).

The Partnership Forum, titled “The Strategic Value of Connecting Business & Development,” highlighted the successes of USAID agency partnerships with the private sector over the last decade and further emphasized the role that Public Private Partnerships (PPP) or Global Partnerships (GP) will play in the future international aid environment.

In his keynote speech, Shah discussed ways the international development field could address budget cuts facing the U.S. Official Development Assistance (ODA) account. He also addressed the importance of creating a strong, sustainable and effective relationship between USAID, the private sector and the growing community of non-traditional aid providers/donors who have emerged in the last decade. Gary Lazor, DI Development Senior Director, Business Development, attended the Association for Slavic, East European, & Eurasian Studies (ASEEES)’s 43rd Annual Convention held November 17-20, 2011 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C.

In this year’s convention, themed “Authorities,” attendees reflected on the multiform characteristics and practices of authority across Eastern European and Eurasian realms in the past and present. At the political level, since the end of socialism, scholars have aimed to make sense of democratization in a variety of political and seemingly apolitical contexts. Participants discussed what kinds of authority leaders have been drawing on to claim power and the sources of their legitimacy.

During a panel titled “The Dragon and the Bear: Sino-Russian Relations in Asia,” Matthew Ouimet, U.S. Department of State Department, discussed striking a balance in Chinese-Russian diplomacy toward North and South Korea. Vitaly Kozyrev, Endicott College, discussed building a revised security architecture in Asia with Russia assuming a new leadership role in the region. Categorized as “Russia’s march to the east,” both panelists focused on the country’s new foreign policy activities and strategies for dealing with China—influencing discussions and negotiations between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and Republic of Korea. DI Development Kicks Off Situational Awareness and Security (SAS) Training

On Oct. 13, DI Development, a business of DynCorp International, kicked off the first round of Situational Awareness and Security (SAS) Training for International Development and Aid Workers. The one-day training session took place at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC.

Twenty-five participants attended from a variety of organizations in the international development field. Representatives from Creative Associates International, Chemonics International Inc., Amnesty International, Chevron’s Escravos Gas-to-Liquids (EGTL) Project,  International Business & Technical Consultants, Inc. (IBTCI), START Services, American Institute for Research, International Resources Group (IRG) and Nathan Associates, Inc. all took part. Read more →
